helping to create a low-carbon economy”. While companies now scramble to assemble their green credentials, Wal-Mart are already raising the stakes, with Leo Scott addressing a meeting in the UK this month at the invitation of Prince Charles. He promised to take nonrenewable energy “off our shelves and out of the lives of our customers”. “Forgive the jargon, but we think sustainability is cool,” he told the audience of high-level environmentalists, corporate executives and government officials at the meeting in London eager to hear of these new policy pledges. “And perhaps more than anything else we see sustainability as mainstream”. He called on each of Wal-Mart’s 1.3 million employees to make one element of their lives more green by, for example, switching to energy-saving light bulbs or buying organic produce. He outlined the company’s plans to use only 100 per cent renewable energy in its stores, creating zero waste, and selling products that sustain the environment. He said that he was seeking to send no waste from his UK stores to landfill by 2010. And Sainsbury’s, another leading UK supermarket company, has announced efforts to tackle deforestation by selling paper products by the middle of this year only from recycled or sustainable sources. Green pressure groups have given the promises a cautious welcome but many environmentalists are treating the new pledges with a generous dose of salt. Sandra Bell, food campaigner at Friends of the Earth, said Wal-Mart and Tesco expansion policies contradicted their green agenda and questioned their commitment to cutting their carbon footprints. But there’s no doubt environmentalists, conservationists, governments and the leaders of many other industries will be looking closely at these promised moves by such major retail giants. Q & A

Undiscovered Worlds – Towards a Framework for Real-Time Procedural World Generation

With advances in computer hardware, 3D game worlds are becoming larger and more complex. Consequently the development of game worlds becomes increasingly time and resource intensive. This paper presents a framework for generation of entire virtual worlds using procedural generation. The approach is demonstrated with the example of a virtual city.

Prolonged hypotension following elective stenting of an internal carotid artery stenosis.

We report a case of a 72-year-old man who had undergone elective stenting of an asymptomatic high grade stenosis of the proximal left internal carotid artery. The indication was progression of the stenosis over a 3 year period despite receiving maximal medical therapy, and patient preference for stenting over endarterectomy. He became profoundly hypotensive in the immediate post-stent period an...

Toxoplasma gondii: prevalence in species and genotypes of British bats (Pipistrellus pipistrellus and P. pygmaeus).

Few studies have investigated Toxoplasma gondii infections in bat populations and none have reported its presence in protected British bat species. Using a collection of dead/euthanased bats collected from Lancashire, UK, two species of bats (Pipistrellus pipistrellus and Pipistrellus pygmaeus) were tested using a highly sensitive SAG1-PCR method specific for detection of T. gondii DNA (n=77; 7...

Imaging tumor vascular heterogeneity and angiogenesis using dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging.

This article reviews the application of dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging in both clinical studies and early-phase trials of angiogenesis inhibitors. Emphasis is placed on how variation in image acquisition and analysis affects the meaning and use of derived variables. We then review the potential for future developments, with particular reference to the application of dynami...
